Cost centers

Cost centers are a second analytical dimension orthogonal to branches. Branches answer 'where' (Riyadh, Jeddah). Cost centers answer 'what' (OPD, Pharmacy, Radiology, Admin). Use both together and your P&L can answer 'what does Pharmacy contribute across all branches?' or 'what does the Riyadh OPD net?'

When to use them

Multi-service clinics, hospitals, and any practice that wants to attribute revenue and expenses to specific functional units benefit most. Single-branch single-service clinics typically don't need them — leave the cost center field blank on transactions and reports behave exactly as before.

Creating a cost center

Open Tenant > Accounting > Cost centers and click New cost center. Enter a short code (e.g. OPD, PHARMA), a name, and optionally pin it to a specific branch when the cost center only exists at one location. Deactivating a center keeps all historical journal lines tagged — only future entries lose it as a pick option.

Tagging transactions

The Expense form and each line of the manual journal entry form expose a Cost center dropdown. Tagging is optional — leave it blank for transactions that don't belong to any single center (corporate overhead, etc.). Tags propagate from the source transaction onto the auto-posted journal entry.

Revenue tagging (services and invoices)

Each service in the catalog has an optional Default cost center field (Tenant > Services > edit a service). When an invoice line bills that service — directly or through an appointment — the Service Revenue credit on the auto-posted journal entry is tagged with the service's cost center. One invoice can mix services from different cost centers; the journal entry will split the revenue across the right buckets. A/R, Cash, and VAT Payable lines stay untagged by convention — they're tenant-wide balances, not service-line attributable. Services without a default cost center post against an untagged bucket, which still appears in reports — it just doesn't show up under any specific cost-center slice.

Filtering reports

Profit & Loss and General Ledger reports both accept a cost-center filter at the top of the page. Trial Balance and Balance Sheet do not — by accounting convention those are full-tenant position reports.
